My cousin’s wedding recently brought my boyfriend and I out to Vancouver. Since we were already spilling money on the plane ticket, we figured we’d extend our stay a little bit and head to the interior: enter Kelowna.
We were only in Kelowna for a couple of days (in a shoulder season), so we had a brief overview of what the area had to offer — but we definitely enjoyed what we did see, like the unfiltered sunset above, hastily snapped on my cell phone camera.
I’m always so curious about other people’s reading lists. I often feel like I don’t get the chance to sit down and properly read, so my “current” reading list tends to last me an embarrassingly long time. Is that true of other people, too?
Cookbooks are the exception, of course, which I read like the newest Harry Potter book. I tend to switch cookbooks out more frequently, depending on what style of food is speaking to me at the moment. We’re in a weird place weather-wise, right now. It’s officially fall and the university campus is overrun with students, but every day of the last couple of weeks has topped out at over 30°C.
I’m always looking for excuses to make crumble–it’s super easy to make and so forgiving. In September (when I’m in denial that winter weather is [optimistically] only a couple months away), I like to raid the market and/or grocery store for whatever local fruit is still rolling through.
This week I had a bunch of plums staring at me from the back of the fridge, a fragrant basket of peaches begging to be eaten and a little extra time on my hands. So I pulled out the butter, chopped up some fruit (I didn’t bother peeling anything) and went to town making a crumble.
What are your best chocolate chip cookie secrets? There are some things I always do to get a little extra flavour and perfect texture: extra vanilla, extra salt, extra Lindt 70% chocolate and a few extra days in the fridge (rolled into a log like slice-and-bake cookies.) Then there are things that I do only some of the time to switch things up (usually when I run out of the stuff I normally add): a tsp of almond extract, browned butter, dark brown sugar and an odd mix of chocolate chips from three half-empty bags.
Please tell me that you find half-finished bags of ingredients in your pantry, too.
Do you have a summer to-do list? Unfortunately I don’t get two months off in the summer like I did when I was in school, so the warm, sunny months always seem to fly by really quickly. I try to keep a list of summer activities to get up to before winter returns and shuts me inside eating leftover Christmas chocolates. (I love leftover Christmas chocolates.)

In a recent post I added a link for a lovely summer stew recipe. I make variations on this stew all the time–and in fact, I rarely look at the recipe anymore, because it is a recipe that invites change, inspiration, and fridge cleaning.
The basics of this dish include zucchini, eggplant, onion and tomato. It’s sort of like a hasty weeknight ratatouille. For the bowl pictured above, I threw in some green beans because they’re in season and were lounging in my vegetable drawer. I’ve included my ‘basic’ recipe for this stew below; go ahead and alter it to your tastes and vegetable drawer.
Do you ever do that thing where you save hundreds of recipes with the good intention of making them and then…uh…never do?

Except that I do it all the time (except for the lovely cake pictured above–I made that last week). Sometimes I wander back through this old recipe lane and discover that I would indeed still like to try these dishes. There is something pretty satisfying about a quiet Sunday. My boyfriend was working a 12-hour shift today, so things were definitely quiet. It was way too hot to hang around outside (unless you were hanging around in a beer garden, which is hear is unusual to do alone), so I decided to stay inside for a lazy day. What did you get up to?
